But I thought I'd share a gem of a conversation that I came across today in my IM logs with (who else?) my Yoda - dated Sept 11th, 2007.
yq: your dad is cool yq: any dad who can say "illegal erection" with a straight face is cool stephanie: or any dad who gives their eighteen year old daughter a used whorehouse yq : yes. yq: any dad who would admit to having OWNED a whorehouse stephanie: oh btw stephanie: we're waiting for the government to buy back the whorehouse from us stephanie: and they pay better if we can prove that the house has been lived in stephanie: that people are actually living in it so it affects their life stephanie: so now he's taking all our old furniture and putting it in the whorehouse to stage that someone's living there yq : hahahahahahaha yq: i love your dad yq: that is HILARIOUS stephanie: yep stephanie: so we're going to get a new tv and a new fridge stephanie: and putting the old ones in the whorehouse yq: you know, we should create a sitcom in the US yq: about asians yq: and just write about our lives stephanie: they tried to do that. didn't sell. yq: seriously? stephanie: margaret cho was in it stephanie: yep stephanie: all american family yq: gah stephanie: bd wong was in it too yq: she's not chinese stephanie: it was about koreans yq: meh, koreans yq: they don't have the culture that we do yq: all the superstitions yq: and trying to cheat the government yq: that's pure chinese stephanie: yep stephanie: koreans are boring stephanie: chinese are most interesting stephanie: i should just write a biography stephanie:it'd be like a cross between amy tan and david sedaris yq:yes
Side note: I love David Sedaris, but his sense of humour is so wince-inducing. Kind of like Stephanie's, actually.

Awesomest awesome that ever awesomed.
I was going to go to bed about 2 hours ago so that I could get up early to see Mike Hussey bat. It looks like it's not going to happen though. I can't sleep. Again. So I'll just hope that he slowly accumulates a double-century.
Today, someone in the lab commented (again) that I'm very Americanised. I don't think I am, though. Honestly. I use proper UK-English spelling with punctuation (NO TYPE LYKE DIS). I also use words foul language like "wanker" (at least in my head). Anyway. I was talking to my Yoda about it, and the following conversation resulted from my therapy session:
yq: i don't think i'm extremely americanised Stephanie: your face is americanized yq: hey, you're CANADIAN. wtf do you know about americans Stephanie: americans are canadians, except NOT NICE
Stephanie is an obvious exception to her own general rule.
Back to my futile attempts to sleep.

Best rumour today: MY BLOODY VALENTINE MAY BE RE-FORMING FOR A NEW ALBUM.
Just got back from the Brandi Carlile Melbourne gig. It was awesome. Yes, italics AND bold. It is literally the best gig that I've ever been to, and I'd had high expectations because I heard that they were amazing live. That they were. The energy was fantastic, the band was tight, the songs were rockin' and the crowd pretty much knew every fucking word of every song (Ok, I was part of the crowd and I didn't).
Favourite parts of the show: When Brandi Carlile sang totally UNPLUGGED AND ACOUSTICALLY, their covers of Radiohead's "Creep", Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" and Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" - and "The Story" - which is fucking amazing live. I was right in row one, clapping, bopping my head and singing along to the parts that I knew - and it was SO WORTH IT. To think that I might've spent the night just sitting at home tinkering around on my guitar. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's just - I would've missed out on so much.
I spoke to Brandi, Phil and Tim after the show, and let them know how much I appreciated it. I even bought a t-shirt. I think I've made improvements from the last time I spoke to someone whom I was geeky about. One year ago (11th Nov, I remember) I went to see Matt Pond PA - which I described as "almost a spiritual experience". When I spoke to the band members after that (Dana, the cellist and Steve the Bassist, with Matt Pond himself standing 2 meters away) I went all unbelievably shy and actually ran away halfway through the conversation. YES, I DID. SHUT UP STEPHANIE, I KNOW I AM EMOTIONALLY RETARDED.
I did better this time, Brandi was very friendly and appreciative, and she shook my hand 3 times. Then I shut up and went home with my dignity intact.
They will be back in April, to open for - of all bands - Maroon 5. I don't mind Maroon 5. But I will bet that the tickets will cost upward of $100. I simply can't afford that kind of money. I am so glad that I went tonight because I know that they will be huge in the future, and it might be my only opportunity to see them (at the unbelievably low cost of $24).
Their album music might not be something that I can listen to continuously (like Arcade Fire), but their live show will take something very special to beat.
So fucking special... I wish I was special.
Side note: Is it scary that I spent the entire show drooling over the Martin that Brandi was playing? Seriously. It looks and sounds like a dream (not that I would've noticed if the band didn't already sound amazing).
Next up: Tegan and Sara, Dec 12th/13th.

I know I promised certain individuals that I would not talk about politics here, but I don't care. So what if I'm boring? YOU'RE BORING TOO.
Here is the "Fans for Writers" FAQ on why fans should support the writers' strike.
Marshall Herskovitz, who together with Ed Zwick created "Once and Again", "Thirtysomething" and wrote for "My So-Called Life", also blogged an intelligent, insightful and truthful entry for the LA Times about Hollywood. I am excited about "Quarterlife". I heard about the pilot being in production in 2005, and was devastated when it wasn't picked up. These are writers with proven records. I honestly hope that "Quarterlife" does extraordinarily well, and proves itself to be as much of a "fuck you, exploitative wankers" to the industry as Radiohead's "In Rainbows" was to the RIAA etc.
Also: Joss Whedon blogged yesterday and today again. It's more commentary on the strike, and how the media (obviously with vested interests) is misrepresenting the writers. Jenna Fischer (PAM!) blogged again about the strike, and so did James Gunn. Obviously it's a stand that is not limited to the writers.
Especially pertinent part from Jenna's blog:
Let's just say of the current situation: The studios claimed that DVDs was the sticking issue, and the writers took it off the table - but the studio representatives still walked out. Then the studios went crying to the media, essentially lying about the whole thing. I definitely know who I am supporting in this. Even if it means that I don't get new TV for months.

What my lj icon says.
Jenna Fischer (Very lovable Pam from The Office) blogged very cogently here about the reasons for the strike (i.e. no more new eps of The Office), and although I am a Dunderhead, I am 100% behind it.
She also links to a blog entry on the same topic by her ex-husband, James Gunn.
I've known about the strike that started this week for about a month now, because I am a geek and keep track of the comings/goings of the WGA - essentially an organisation of my favourite creative people.
Joss Whedon posted yesterday and today about his views on the strike in response to Whedonesque's support of the WGA strike.
So kids - if you don't have any more new episodes of Lost/Desperate Housewives/House, M.D./Battlestar Galactica/The Office/30 Rock/The Colbert Report/Basically any TV show that is scripted, now you know why. Support the writers who entertain you.
The corporate suits are making money by selling digital media on the internet (I bought the entire first season of 30 Rock on iTunes and regret it now) and the writers, actors, directors, and the teamsters (etc people who do everything) are not seeing a cent of it. The writers who do well in monetary terms are few and far between. This is not about them. This is about the ordinary tv-writers who barely get by, and will take a huge pay cut because they don't have income from residuals if a digital media clause isn't hammered out.
Think about them. Support the strike.
Also: Steve Carell and the writing staff of The Office are awesome.

I saw last week's episode of The Office, and it is so many levels of awesome, I can't even -
Just watch this youtube clip of the final product from last week's ep. It's such a team effort and full of love. Awwe. I want to watch this week's ep (it was directed by Joss Whedon).
Speaking of which, he is going to write/direct/produce a new series Dollhouse, starring Eliza Dusku (Faith from BtVS). To say that I'm excited is like saying an ocean is just a puddle of water. Also, Tim Minear will be working with Joss on the series. That is also exciting. I love his previous work on Wonderfalls, The Inside, Firefly and Angel.
It's been a long week. But I'm feeling surprisingly good. I'll probably stay home to rest tomorrow. No work!
Met up with cute brother today for a birthday lunch (his not mine), he's dyed his hair red. I wonder what my parents will say when they see him in 2 weeks. Especially since his eyebrows are completely black and that shade of red - let's just say it doesn't go with his complexion.
Also, Sufjan Stevens is touring Australia in January, but I won't be around then. What a waste! I loved "Illinois", and The Predatory Wasp is one of my favourite songs. I love how it builds into this massive Hallelujah chorus, it's amazingly uplifting.
I am still praying that somehow I get to see Arcade Fire at Big Day Out 2008. I might even pay exorbitant scalpers' prices to get a ticket. I am that desperate. Eugene knows that seeing Arcade Fire live is near the top of my "things to do before I die" list. It is even ranked higher than bungee jumping. I am being perfectly serious.

( Blog Post inspired by this conversation... )
You learn something new everyday. I'd like to say that the ride traumatised me greatly - which is the reason why I'm so screwed up today. But it just isn't true.
Now you know why Chinese people don't care about how their actions influence others. Beyond this hell there is just another. You should also understand why we're so competitive. (If you're going to be evil, you should aim for the 18th level.) Mediocrity is simply not acceptable.
Also Stephanie? The fact that you're in law school, a lapsed Catholic and gay automatically qualifies you for the 18th level. Congratulations.
It says something about life in Singapore, considering that we have one of the world's highest suicide rates despite these beliefs.
One day I should blog in detail about what I remember from Chinese culture lessons and growing up with these superstitions. It will be highly amusing.

So, a quick post/plug/update before I go to bed.
http://www.freerice.com/index.php Play this game, donate rice, feed the poor, improve your vocabulary. Or if you don't want to improve your vocabulary, just click randomly. 1/4 of the times you click will be a donation (unless you're really unlucky).
The Flames lost to the Sharks. On the brighter side of things, Vancouver also lost (nyah nyah) so it's not like they made up any ground. Cornell Big Red looks good this season, we just thrashed Ottawa 8-0 on Sunday. Also picked up a first round draft pick, which is pretty rare. We're playing Hahvahd (sucks!) at Lynah East (Bright) in about 3 weeks. I miss the fish. And the toothpaste.
More updates when I actually have stuff to update.

I can't find my disc of photos from my summer '06 tour of the East Coast. This is deeply distressing.
I also realised while going through my approximately 5 cartels of discs that it is not smart to label them generically, like "music" or "stuff" (yes, I am that dumb and label stuff "stuff"). Because then you accumulate tonnes of such discs without ever knowing what's on them. One day I will have to reorganise. One day.
This week's 30 Rock rocks. It's a lot funnier than last week's. Haven't seen this week's The Office yet. I'll probably save it for tomorrow night.
Also, talking to my friend is like writing a sitcom:
This happens everyday.
I am wondering if 12:41am is too late/early to go get ice cream. These cravings, they are annoying. No, I am not pregnant.
Also, I went CD shopping today because I was trying to find 五月天's old album 時光機 and LIMEWIRE DOES NOT HAVE IT. Neither does Bittorrent. Or any Chinese pop music shop in Melbourne, apparently. They stock crap like every TWINS album, but not good music. This is terrible.

My ice hockey team (the Calgary Flames) is no longer bottom of the table. That is cause for a huge celebration.
Now to squash Edmonton in our next game at home and pray that the Canucks lose (again)(and nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah BC SUCKS). Also, if someone can explain to me how we could lead 4-0 at Colorado and still lose 5-4, I'd be very grateful.
I have this week's The Office. I've only just watched last week's episode plus 30 Rock. It is awesome. I may watch Pushing Daisies too. It's by Bryan Fuller, the guy who created Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls. Wonderfalls is possibly the best canceled series I've ever seen. Yes, even including Firefly (because I like Jaye better than Mal. Very slightly.).
I saw "Once" this week. I would've liked it even if I didn't already like the Frames. It's a great film, the best among all that I've seen this year (which admittedly isn't very many).
I'm going to see "Waitress" this Sunday because it's CHEAPCHEAPCHEAP ($10 is cheap for Australia). And all the proceeds of Sunday's screening go to the Breast Cancer Foundation for research or something. Who cares?
So this is my first post. And that last sentence was redundant.
I created this journal to be less boring than I usually am. Somehow I doubt it's working.
